ESSENTIAL SKINCARE’S SUNSCREEN GUIDE

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WEAR SUNSCREEN?

Sun’s Out and So Are We!

Sunscreen is always important, but even more-so when we spend time outdoors!

Sun damage accounts for 80% of the signs of aging. Imagine if you avoided sun exposure how much younger your skin would look. Sunscreen helps to protect your skin against these signs of aging including hyper-pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles. It also help to improve results from skincare treatments and products. Sun exposure can also cause skin cancer which is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Protecting your skin from the sun not only makes it look better but also can save your life.

When you dont wear sunscreen you risk sun damage that can lead to skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, and sun damage. Not wearing sunscreen and exposing your skin to the sun will cause it to age quicker and can even cause cancer.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SUNSCREEN?

Many sunscreens can be chalky and hard to apply. Often leave streaking or leave you feeling caked on.  When Choosing a sunscreen  its important to pick something that you like to wear and feels good when you apply it. You will never apply something daily if you hate the way it feels. If your more oily prone choose more of a matte sunscreen that wont add to oil production like Jan Marinis physical sunscreen. Dry skin types might like something more hydrating like the Jan Marinis Antioxidant sunscreen this leaves the skin with a dewy finish.Your skin color may be another factor in choosing the right sunscreen. Often with darker skin colors it is hard to find a sunscreen that doesnt leave a white streaking or residue behind. Choosing a sunscreen that doesn’t cause this will be important. Try Jan Marinis sun screens they don’t leave any streaking behind and blend in with all skin colors.  Whatever you choose make sure its something you love so you will use it more often.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF SUNSCREEN PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL

Physical sunscreen

This type of sunscreen blocks the rays before they penetrate your skin. Like Jan Marini Physical protect that has ingredients like Zinc and Titanium dioxide.

Chemical sunscreens

Absorb UV rays before they can damage the skin.

Like Circadia’s Light day sunscreen. This sunscreen has active ingredients like avabezone and oxtinoxate. This sunscreen also includes peptides and other ingredients to help protect the skin against sun damage.

WONDERING WHO SHOULD WEAR SUNSCREEN?

Everyone should wear sunscreen. If you are over the age of 6 months you should wear a sunscreen daily.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I APPLY MY SUNSCREEN

It is important to apply your sunscreen daily. Even if it is winter and there is no sun out, there are still damaging rays coming through. When you are in the sun, you should apply your sunscreen every 2 hours.

WHAT LEVEL OF SPF SHOULD I BE USING?

Research has shown that a 30 spf is sufficient to protect the skin when used appropriately. Anything above this number only increases the protections by a very small percentage. For example a 30 spf block 97% of uvb rays and 50 spf blocks 98%.

what does spf mean? – spf stands for sun protection factor. This number tells you how long it would take for your skin to burn /become red as compared to if you were wearing no sunscreen at all. So if you apply a spf of 35 it would take you 35x longer to burn than if you had no sunscreen on at all.  However you have to consider how long your skin would normally burn, and the amount of sun exposure and strength you are receiving. This is why reapplying is so important.

MY FAVORITE SUNSCREENS

  • JanMarini Physical Protectant Spf 45
  • Circadia Light day sunscreen
  • Jan Marini Antioxidan Sunscreen
  • Elta MD Elements
  • Coola Mineral Sunscreen

DARKER PIGMENTED SKIN STILL NEEDS TO APPLY SUNSCREEN.

No matter your skin color the sun can damage your skin. Causing hyper-pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and even cancer. Just because your skin may be darker or you tan well it is still important to wear sunscreen daily and reapply when in the sun.

IS MAKEUP ENOUGH TO PROTECT MY SKIN FROM THE SUN?

Makeup alone is not meant to protect the skin from the skin. Some makeups have sunscreens in them but often they are a low spf and does not offer the full protection. Also if you need to reapply you will have to put your full foundation on again to protect your skin from the sun. I would recommend to have a sunscreen you enjoy applying and you can use under your makeup. Many even have a tint in them like JanMarini Physical protectant, this sunscreen has a universal tint and blends in with all skin colors. Its also great underneath your makeup and even offers a light coverage. .
