When starting a new skincare routine you may notice small breakouts and pimples on the skin, this reaction is due to your skin purging.
WHEN YOUR NEW ROUTINE CONSISTS OF EXFOLIATING PRODUCTS SUCH AS ACIDS, RETINALS, AND ENZYMES IT CAN CAUSE WHAT IS KNOWN AS PURGING.
Due to the increased cell turnover from these exfoliating products pimples, blackheads bumps, and even cysts can happen.
This process of purging is normal and it’s important to stick with your products to see the full results. That’s right don’t stop using it if you see a Normal reaction! It is common and often part of the process. Try speaking with your esthetician about altering the routine there may be ways to gradually increase these exfoliants to reduce irritation.
However, not all reactions are Normal and sometimes a product just isn’t right for you.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NORMAL PURGING AND A NEGATIVE REACTION TO A NEW PRODUCT?
Here are a few signs that you’re having a reaction and not purging.
- Breakouts in new areas
Purging typically occurs in an area you have broken out previously. - Prolonged breakouts
Lasting more than 2-3 weeks. When you are purging these breakouts don’t last long. Since you have increased cell turnover usually they will clear up quickly. - New acne types
Let’s say you start breaking out in cystic acne spots and your used to small breakouts or blackheads, this is most likely a reaction. - Added Non-exfoliating products
Skin purging is an increase in cell turnover and if your products don’t have retinal, acid, or enzymes there is no cell turnover. Hence you are most likely reacting to the product not seeing purging
*If you notice a negative reaction you will need to stop using this product and talk with your esthetician to find the right products for you.
